Maya Advanced Character Rigging

Award-winning 3D animator TJ Galda has continued his new series of instructional material regarding Character Rigging with the much anticipated release of an advanced DVD outlining how to create muscles and tendons using computer graphics software such as Autodesk's Maya. For many 2d artists, the transition to 3 dimensions can feel quite daunting. Depending on your familiarity with computer software, this learning curve can feel impossible. In standard 3d applications such as Maya, 3d Studio Max, Modo, Soft Image etc, working with a 3rd dimension on a 2 dimensional screen ads a whole new level of complexity. Suddenly you have to deal with polygon vertices, nurbs curves, and subdivision surfaces. All of these new visual forms require entirely new tools. ZBrush approaches the 3d media from a completely different perspective (no pun intended). This article is for those who are unfamiliar with ZBrush, but are curious about it. Before I installed ZBrush and spent some time learning the program, I had absolutely zero experience with it.

I've used Modo for the character modeling and UVs and XSI for the shapes efinements, shaders and render.
I've used Modo to model the mesh and setup the UVs, unwrapping different parts like head, torso, arms and legs.
The head and the face were refined in XSI using real photographs as references from www.3d.sk, using the proportional modeling and smooth poly tools to maintain a good face shape to modify in the next step.

The Arcadia project was a personal challange. I tried to use all the techniques that I have learned over the last few months by my self. By the way I'm interested in the history of art and I always try to learn as much as I can from the great masters of last centuries (Caravaggio, Possin, Casper David Friedrich and so on) Maybe from there comes the slight 2d/painting touch of the final image? It's crazy that they were able to crate such amazing artwork without any dual processor, 3GB RAM workstation and two 21 inch displays :) My first inspiration was like a brainwave. I saw a picture of some old columns and five minutes later I had my first poor sketches on a piece of paper; as you know, it's important that you draw all the good ideas that come into your mind, no matter how good you can draw! After intensive sketching I came up with a desert columned hall, a crashed airplane and a divine light in the background. In my mind I sub-divided the whole scene into a foreground that shows a wreck (here I put the airplane and the jet); the space in the middle of the picture represent a hopeful presence (this is were you can see the two travellers); and finally a uncertain future ? the shining background. But enough now with this scary explanations and the art stuff :) Let's have a look at the technical part.
